Anni CaylorHello hello! Today, I’m not here with the latest trend for you, but instead I’m here to let you know that we won’t be posting anymore for the summer. Luckily for you, though, once the next semester starts back up, you will be seeing even more great posts! As a sort of farewell to you lovely readers, I wanted to just rattle off a few of my other favorite trends that I’ll be wearing all summer. Oversized denim coats, overalls, pairing sneakers with dresses, and heeled clogs are my focus right now, but I’m excited to see what other random trends pop up. My best advice if you are hoping to try a new trend but aren’t sure where to start is to do a little search on Pinterest, pick your favorite look, and make it your own. If you really really don’t know where to start and don’t want a lot of creative freedom, you can even just go to your favorite store and buy the pieces that they pair together on the mannequin. However you choose to do it, you’ll all look lovely this summer. Rock all your finals, enjoy the nice weather, and be sure to hop on back once classes start again to find out what we’ve been up to! And finally, thanks for letting us all share our thoughts with you, and thanks for making it a great semester!

By Anni CaylorWhen finals are over and my life is easy and I have nothing to actually worry about, my biggest concern becomes what I do when it’s too warm for a sweater but not warm enough for a tank top. I know it might sound trivial, but apparently it’s a big enough concern for me that when I bought my first kimono I felt like all of my problems were solved. I just don’t even know where to start with kimonos, and I really don’t fully understand yet how they are able to make any outfit drastically cooler. Whether they’re long or short or light or dark or trimmed with lace or trimmed with fringe you will instantly look like you spend your days listening to cool music and drinking iced coffees in the park (if that’s what you’re going for, I don’t know). Basically, if you don’t have a kimono I would suggest getting one stat, especially now that beautiful weather is here to stay (hopefully). There really aren’t any rules with kimonos. You can wear them with shorts, jeans, dresses or skirts. I think my favorite part about them is also that for some (also magical; also unknown) reason it doesn’t matter if traditionally the pattern of your top and the pattern of your kimono would clash, for some reason it just works. So go forth, mix and match to your heart’s content, and allow yourself to finally be the perfect temperature no matter what.
By Anni CaylorRemember in middle school when the fast track to being cool was a denim miniskirt from Limited Too? All you had to do was pair it with a striped long cami and some leggings and you were killing it. Just picture that and understand why I was so hesitant to give the new denim skirt trend a try. It instantly brought me back to my awkward, gross, awful years, but luckily I’ve been able to move past the horror and I can finally enjoy this new look. This has quickly become my favorite trend of the year, and one that I go to almost every day. Especially for those, like me, who hate to wear jeans, this solves so many problems. A ton of my tops are so brightly colored that I never have any bottoms to pair with them, but in swoops the denim skirt to save the day. You can wear these with or without tights, dark or light wash, high on your waist or more on your hips. They can be dressed up with a cute pair of flats or sandals and a cute top, or dressed down with a pair of converse and a plain or graphic tee. You can even tie a sweater or flannel around your waist if you’re really trying to get nostalgic. If you, like me, are stuck wondering how to avoid looking like you just hopped off the bus on your first day of 7th grade, I have one big tip for you: closures. Make sure you don’t get the classic miniskirt that has a zipper that goes halfway down the front, as that can easily TBT you to bad times, but instead look to one that has buttons or snap closures that go down the entirety of the skirt. Check out Zara,Topshop,Urban Outfitters,Forever 21,actually, now that I think of it, I haven’t been to a store yet that didn’t carry one of these, so you’re set! Now, next time you wish you liked jeans and wanted some comfortable bottoms to pair with any shirt, you know exactly what to do.
By Anni CaylorWe’ve talked about ‘90s mom jeans and I’m sure you’ve noticed the ‘90s grunge style taking over outfits everywhere. Let’s get down to the basics though. Velvet. Velvet shirts, dresses, skirts, shoes, necklaces, purses. You can find anything you want in this heavenly, magical fabric. And why wouldn’t you want to wear the most comfortable fabric in existence? The best thing about it is that is born from decades past, so it can be found in virtually any thrift store. I own way too much velvet, but my favorite pairing is a black velvet dress that I got at a thrift store for $10 and an oversized denim jacket (a trend that we’ll get to later). The most popular velvet colors right now are the classic black and a deep crimson. If you do go with a crimson piece or any other color, especially if it’s a dress, stick with that as the focal point of your outfit. Make everything else complement it, without overpowering it. With a black piece though, you can go ahead and add something extra. Pair a black dress with a floral kimono for spring or make it casual with some flannel. With either piece, you can’t really go wrong with any shoe choices. Converse or any other sneakers make it casual, or wear a pair of booties to dress it up more. The best part about this is that you can’t really go wrong, velvet looks great in any form with anything. Just be warned that people will probably want to touch it. By Anni CaylorA few years ago we were overrun with gladiator sandals. They were everywhere, and made quite a statement, with some of them lacing up the entirety of the leg. I’m still trying to fully understand the appeal of looking like an ancient warrior, but fortunately this trend isn’t back yet. Now we have a new kind of laceup shoe, the laceup flat (and now the chunky heel too) is taking a much cuter and less warthemed approach this time around. These shoes are much daintier, and take their influence from ballet slippers, with their laces crisscrossing over the foot without the stiff structure seen on the gladiators. My personal favorites are pointytoed ballet flats or slightly roundtoe chunky heels. Some places even offer them in suede, which while it may not be practical in case of the surprise rainstorm, is a super cute option if you are trying to add a bit of extra intrigue. The best part about these shoes is that they can easily be worn with a pair of cuffed jeans or dressed up more with a skirt or a dress. The only thing that I wouldn’t pair them with would be tights, but since the weather is finally turning, this shouldn’t even be a concern. Really, no matter what you do with these shoes, they will look great, and can be casual, preppy or any other style you’re trying to go for, depending on what you pair them with. These can also be found anywhere for virtually any price point. If you’re looking to spend around $40 or less, check out Target, Zara or Forever 21. If you’re okay with $50 or more, you can find some great options at Steve Madden or J. Crew, or Sam Edelman if you’re wanting more of an open sandal style. And luckily, when you find your favorite pair, you won’t have to fight any Romans. By Anni CaylorWhen I was little, my mom would go crazy with matching my hats to my dresses to my sweaters. Then I grew up, started picking out my own outfits and learned that while you don’t want your clothes to clash, you definitely don’t want them to match too much. That is, until the coordinating sets, or coord sets, popped up as the latest trend. Stores like Zara and H&M started introducing this concept into their stores on a small scale last summer, but they’re about to really kick off now that the weather is getting nicer. This is definitely a spring and summer trend, as wearing sweaters and pants in the exact same print can quickly become a bit too much, but a crop top or even long sleeve top paired with some shorts or a skirt is just quirky enough to be casual but chic. Keep in mind just a couple of things to look out for to make sure that this look will work perfectly. First, make sure that you steer clear from looking like you rolled out of bed and are trying to rock a pajama set all day. The easiest way to do this is to make sure that both pieces aren’t oversized. Try to offset a flowy top with a more form fitting skirt or pair of shorts, and vice versa. You can also do this by wearing a crop top that ends slightly above where your bottoms start, as seen in all of the photos below. Second, since these sets generally come in a bold color or bright pattern, try to stick with more understated accessories. You don’t want your outfit to be competing for attention with the rest of your look, so stick with neutral colors for shoes and handbags, and more simple jewelry. The best part of these sets are that while you can wear them together, you can also mix it up and pair them with other pieces, creating a completely different look. If you really want to go allin, you can make this look yourself by deconstructing a patterned dress, but if you’re a little less crafty like me, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, Zara and H&M all have exactly what you’re looking for. Just go to their site and type in “set” or “skirt set,” and you’re on your way! By Anni CaylorRemember summer of 2012 when cutoff Levi’s shorts were seen everywhere and loved/hated by everyone? Now they’re back, but in all their fulllength glory. The infamous mom jean. The highwaisted, flatbacked, light wash fashion statement from decades past that most people hoped would never come back. But here we are, and we are obsessed. They’re comfortable, casual and have begun to end the skinny jean takeover/continued the latest infatuation with ‘90s nostalgia. They can be found anywhere from Zara and Forever 21 to Urban Outfitters and Topshop. Fortunately, this latest revamp of the mom jean has come to us much improved. They are somehow more flattering than their predecessors, and come in every wash and color you could hope for. The tricky part, however, is what to pair them with to make sure they stay far away from frumpy. For me, the first step is to always cuff the bottom. I still can’t figure out the science behind why this makes them look so much better, but I know it does and I always have to do it. The next factor, and the most important, is the top you pair with it. I always stick with something that isn’t too loose, and that is either a crop top or can be tucked in to show off the waistband or the belt. If you wear a long shirt, the look will become too top heavy. Make sure you let the jeans emphasize your waist, like they are meant to do. Once you get all of this down, you can put your focus to accessories. This is where you can really mix it up. For shoes, I always choose my favorite Steve Madden colorful loafers, but I also love the look of a pair of heels with an ankle strap, or some booties (ideally short enough to not reach the bottom of the cuff). Next, if you’re wearing a simple and understated shirt, think about throwing in a thin belt. I have a floral and sequined one that I like to use to add a point of interest (and, again, an emphasis on my waist), especially if I’m just wearing a white or black tee. If you’re really wanting to go all out, you can do even switch up your purse. I have a hard time remembering (or putting in the effort) to match my purse to my outfit, but when I do think about it, I like to go with a smaller crossbody bag that isn’t too bulky. Now that you know the mom jean can actually look chic, why not go for it. You can get them for less than $30 from Forever 21, and due to the cut, they look good on everyone. They’ve already quickly become my goto, since they are loose and comfortable and finally give me an excuse to whip out my favorite crop tops again, at least when our crazy weather allows.
