By Anni CaylorA few years ago we were overrun with gladiator sandals. They were everywhere, and made quite a statement, with some of them lacing up the entirety of the leg. I’m still trying to fully understand the appeal of looking like an ancient warrior, but fortunately this trend isn’t back yet. Now we have a new kind of laceup shoe, the laceup flat (and now the chunky heel too) is taking a much cuter and less warthemed approach this time around. These shoes are much daintier, and take their influence from ballet slippers, with their laces crisscrossing over the foot without the stiff structure seen on the gladiators. My personal favorites are pointytoed ballet flats or slightly roundtoe chunky heels. Some places even offer them in suede, which while it may not be practical in case of the surprise rainstorm, is a super cute option if you are trying to add a bit of extra intrigue. The best part about these shoes is that they can easily be worn with a pair of cuffed jeans or dressed up more with a skirt or a dress. The only thing that I wouldn’t pair them with would be tights, but since the weather is finally turning, this shouldn’t even be a concern. Really, no matter what you do with these shoes, they will look great, and can be casual, preppy or any other style you’re trying to go for, depending on what you pair them with. These can also be found anywhere for virtually any price point. If you’re looking to spend around $40 or less, check out Target, Zara or Forever 21. If you’re okay with $50 or more, you can find some great options at Steve Madden or J. Crew, or Sam Edelman if you’re wanting more of an open sandal style. And luckily, when you find your favorite pair, you won’t have to fight any Romans.
