By Megan QuistYou know the old tanks with lace on the top of them that were all the rage with a matching sweater from Abercrombie when we were younger? Well now there is a fashionable twist to them! Adding a few more inches of lace, and a plain white tee, and you’ve got a whole new look. From celebrities such as Kendall Jenner to the clothing section of Target, this trend has blown up. The best part? You do not need to go out and buy a new shirt! I'm sure everyone has a white tee in their closet, and or some sort of lace tank. Mix and match! Another switch up on this trend is making it into a crop top. If you have a looser bralette that can also be paired with a tee. Mainly I have seen black and white combos of this, but any color scheme is plausible. Mine outfit is made up of a white tee that actually has lettering on it, but the tank covers it up. The lace dress/shirt is actually a night gown from Victoria's Secret. Lol. But it still works! I would recommend more cotton based lace items during the day as I felt a little awkward in this silky one. (And the fact that we shot this in 20 degree weather). But either way just own your look! I paired it off with thigh high suede grey boots. They are from the Ivanka Trump line. People have also been pairing velvet dresses with tees as well as turtlenecks. Check out the insta below. Fashion cycles so hold on to your old stuff! Have fun styling Fashionistas.

By Megan QuistCelebs are wearing stuff that looks DIY, but in reality each piece is still hundreds to thousands of dollars. Hello we all own a pair of scissors! A big influence on fast fashion lately has been the lace up shirts and built in chokers. Personally my Instagram feed is full of Kardashians and Kendall is the queen of wearing T-Shirt dresses. She typically has an edgy rock band shirt or a black shirt with some sort of image on it worn as a dress.
Simple Steps: 1. Get a size Large or Extra Large T-Shirt (depending on how long it is on you) 2. Decide what you want to do! (You can cut open the whole thing, cold shoulders, add laces, add a choker, make it off the shoulder, just add a simple V, fray it, or just leave the shirt as it is and add a choker that you have!) 3. Start to DIY! Cut and add elements as you go, get creative! 4. Pair your dress with some tall boots or sneakers and snap away some pics! What I did with our Fashion & Business Club T-Shirt: 1. Cut around the main neck seem to leave that as the choker 2. Cut a V down the front 3. Cut holes about an inch apart down the V portion 4. Added some string through the holes 5. Paired it with my Steve Madden Thigh-High boots Retailers With T-Shirt/T-Shirt Dresses: -Pretty Little Thing -Misguided -Nasty Gal -Thrift Stores/Goodwill - DIY By Megan QuistNo need to always wear tights! Before Minnesnowta hits take advantage of the knee high to thigh high boot trend. Depending on the length of your skirt, dress, or shorts, also pair some knee high to thigh high socks with the look. My favorite are always socks with ruffled and or button detailing. To complete the look I am wearing a French Connection skirt with simple black details, and pleats. The turtleneck is paired with a choker. But, this Choker I made into a bolo tie inspired wrap because of the turtleneck being in the way. Lastly, the nails are coffin shaped, and a cute maroon red fall shade. Socks: Saks Fifth Avenue Boots: Charolette Russe Turtle Neck: Ralph Lauren Skirt: French Connection Choker: Forever 21 By Megan QuistSydnee is casual but chic at the same time. The ripped denim (From Gap) adds a touch of personality to the outfit, and doesn't take much more effort than putting on a pair of leggings. Paired with an H&M sweater, that is a mock turtleneck. Paired with a longer solid jacket is perfect for Minnesota Fall which has been fabulously warm lately. Booties are all the rage and range from black, brown, grey, blue, any color out there! They are comfortable and add a little height. To add some flare get some with fringe! Add a few accessories to jazz up the solid color pallets. Quote from Sydnee: "I am loving mock turtlenecks, fringed hems, and oversized bombers." Check out her blog as well! https://sydneesimon.com/2016/11/13/11-12-16/ By Megan QuistMore of the Urban Outfitters style of casual chic has been catching on to all aspects of fast fashion. This outfit stood out to me because it is comfortable yet still looks put together. The shirt says "phone, keys, wallet, coffee" and she even had a coffee in her hand! It is paired with a 2 part jacket that is a cotton sweater with some leather elements added. Some black ripped jeans are a staple item that every girl needs in her closet! From going out to casual walks to class these are perfect for any occasion. Then as for the accessories, baseball caps are very much in! Usually you see Pinterest girls wearing Yankees, but the Cubs was very appropriate for the World Series game! Lastly converse. No questions asked, always put on some converse. By Megan QuistWant a slimming shoe that also doubles for warmth this fall? The tall boots trend is on fire, and better than ever! Varying lengths go from the knee all the way to up your thigh. I love the look of the suede, and you can choose between heeled or flat boots. The kardashian's have also blown up this look, wearing the boots with oversized t-shirt dresses and or super tight dresses. Although the college budget does not typically include the Yeezy line, Steve Madden makes a great shoe! I work at Saks Fifth Ave OFF 5th, and they sell both the grey and the black thigh high boot for $90.00. If you've got a higher budget Stuart Weitzman has some really great boots with genuine quality. As for my boots, these grey ones are part of Ivanka Trumps line, and were $55.00. Advice: Do not buy these boots online! Every brand fits differently, and everyone has different sized legs, therefore fit is key to both be comfortable, and to not have your boot falling down. I would also recommend not getting the ones the tie at the top unless they fit your leg pretty snuggly, otherwise all that extra material will cause the boots to continuously fall down and you will spend your day just re-tying the boots. As for other retailers, Marshalls, and Charolette Russe are also great for lower price points. I have paired these boots with a trendy poncho and leather leggings. By Megan QuistAs we all know the 90s is coming back. Lena is showcasing some retro denim that she actually made from a much longer denim coat by Guess. This adds the perfect amount of detail to go along with the rest of the all black ensemble. It's subtly sexy with the deep V black shirt, and tight jeans. The accessories are killer with a thick black Choker (P.S. never buy a full price Choker!) there are countless ways to make your own. Lena mentioned also making a Choker from the denim left over from her jacket. It looks really cute when you add fringe to it. THE SHOES are doing the most. These platforms are everything. Although they may look high, she quotes herself “sprinting” to class in them. Don't ever underestimate a good heel. Overall, this look really does not take a long time to piece together, so why not add one new element to your campus look when going to class? By Megan QuistRashawn is riding the “Mad Wave of Style” with this RnB inspired look. Trending: Long Tees This long tee is from Zara’s men’s collection X2. It is paired perfectly with the black skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters. The key to this look is to not over layer, as then you will start to look like a blob of clothing. Trending: Bomber Jackets He also did a great job pairing together the little details. Elements of silver can be found throughout the zipper, and other parts of the bomber jacket. This is then paired with the silver jewelry featuring chain necklaces, a watch, and rings. Trending: Chelsea Boots These chelsea boots complete the ensemble with their simple aesthetic. The black flows nicely with the rest of the color scheme. These boots are both stylish and comfortable at the same time. These are Cole Haan. Overall this street style look is perfect to be casual but stylish at the same time. By Megan QuistPair a Casual item with a Dressy one, and you are in for a Fashion-filled day. Lately the Kardashians have been in the media for not only their ambiguous lifestyles, but also their sense of fashion while wandering out and about. Although their wardrobes consist of designer labels from head to toe, I noticed there was a large sense of simplicity to each outfit. For example Kim K is always wearing tight long maxi skirts and a matching crop top. She also is usually wearing a jacket- but it is never on. Instead, she drapes it over her shoulders like a cape. Accessories usually consist of heels, a large bag, and large sunglasses. Her outfit usually just varies by material and color. You know what? I realized I had all of those items in my closet. Putting together a long maxi BCBG Max azria skirt, a detailed crop-top from Foreign Exchange, some black wedges, a black jacket with gold detailing from Saks Fifth Ave OFF 5th, and some Valentino sunglasses completed the same look. The best part about it? Although I felt and looked dresses up in relation to my peers, I was totally comfortable. Your challenge: Find a look on Pinterest and try to re-create it with entirely what you already have in your closet! You will become surprised with what designer duds you already have ;)
By Megan QuistThis spring, do not let the colors of pinks, reds, and or nudes define your color palette. No matter what your skin tone is either, try out something new. NYX has a fabulous selection of cosmetics and surprisingly has been around since 1999. The products range in price from $6.00 to $7.00, and they even have bundles of three different lip products together for as low as $12.00! If that isn't perfect for the college budget item, then I don't know what else is. Also if you are wondering how to pronounce these three letters, they are not separate N.Y.X., but instead it should be pronounced as "Niks." Now this Fashionista is rocking NYX in a bold blue lip color. You can chose from bold, medium, or sheer coverage. I love this new trend of bold lips, especially since a lot of people have not had the confidence to try it out yet! Even with 22 credits, this Fashionista is pulling it together each morning. Although her make up is very simplistic, she ads some spunk to the rest of her outfit. Ripped boyfriend fit jeans, a flannel and some Adidas sneakers are all a girl needs in her closet. I'm sure you already have these items, now it's time to piece them together. No time to shower or know it's going to be one of those never ending days from 6:00am to 11:00pm of studying? Throw on a beanie! The beanie featured is from Carharrt. These are fab as they are under $10.00 and come in an array of colors. Not feeling the beanie? A simple piece of ribbon as a choker could also complete the look if you are needing a last minute accessory. What's on the BEAUTY BAR: To get this Fashionista's look, the previously mentioned bold blue lip color is Moscow Navy Blue. There are other great colors such as Blue Grey, Purple Grey, and Morocco which is a matte coral orange color. Afraid to use bold colors because you have smaller lips? Do not fear, lip liner is here! A great lip liner can be found from MAC and or Urban Decay. This Fashionista recommends spending a little more on the liner because it stops it from smudging or coming off throughout the wear and tear of multiple coffees throughout the day. To stay moisturized before matte lipstick make sure to ad some chapstick to prevent your lips from appearing like they have cracked lines! Palmers FlipBalm is fabulous and fun to flip, with an assortment of fruity flavors.
By Megan QuistIt’s not a surprise that the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is home to many international students from all over the world. Looking around campus many different students, and student groups embed the two different lifestyles to take in and become one with the everyday Minnesotan life. There was one international student from China in my Softlines analysis class that caught my eye. He stood out from the rest of the class with a European shaved hair-cut, and blonde upper half which contrasted against the natural black roots. Each day for class he would be dressed up in something unique. Most boys you see out there are in sweats or the off day they would be in jeans and a lululemon shirt, or even a collared one. The international students never have an off-day, each day is a style day. Asking him to pose for campus street style on Twin, he said that he never tries to look too casual, but not too classy at the same time. He almost feels “sorry” when he is not dressing up, because it really doesn’t take that much more effort! Charlie Qingkang Cao’s outfit consists of the brands and stores: -Pull n Bear (Zara affiliate) -H&M -Nordstrom Rack -Saks Fifth Ave OFF 5th -Forever 21 Usually he goes for the fast fashion since that is the trendiest, and affordable at the same time. Being an apparel design major(originally was biology surprisingly), he feels as if he does pay more attention to the clothes out there more than others, which makes shopping a really fun and inspiring experience. But, at the same time especially in the case of Forever 21, you could have the same shirt that five other people also thought was cute. To stay away from this issue, he recommends to chose something out of your normal color palette or comfort zone. His floral shirt does this exactly! I also feel like a lot of us will look at our closet and notice a majority of about three colors. We need to spice up our wardrobes! By doing this, it can help you start a trend, and make it look less like you are re-wearing the same thing (even though you honestly do have ten black sweaters). Get out there and add some spice to your fast fashion pieces!
By Megan QuistWhy spend $40.00 on some trendy overalls when you can get the equivalent for $5.00 at a thrift store? I feel as if a large majority of people are more afraid to take the dive into a thrift store more so than going to a second hand store. So, what’s the difference between second hand and thrift? Second hand stores are far more particular about what they allow you to sell to them. They need to have the current trendy brands and styles. The fabulous aspect about thrift stores is that they take just about anything and everything. These boho inspired “thrifters” to my eye were the perfect fit for campus street style. The first model featured calls her style experimentive and endogenous with items from Goodwill. She is in “Fit Flops” (with socks), cotton ankle length sweats, a red tank for a pop of color, a bedazzled tank, and an oversized button-up which could be either men’s or women’s. She added her own flair once again with some formal earrings that most would never think to pair with such a laid back outfit, and a multitude of rings. These rings are also very trendy right now. The second model for thrift store style was in a gray tee and some overalls, tights, and some slouchy boots. Her backpack was also functional and stylish! The outfit was from a thrift store, and she was also rocking the unique ring trend as well. The Verdict: Thrfit, Shop, or Secondhand Shop?
In my eyes, if you are going to a themed party or concert, stick to the second hand shops. But if you want something unique that you could potentially wear everyday, thrift! Especially with the recent turn in fashion with the cycle of trends, 70s bohemian style is very much in style now. It is also perfect for the upcoming summer months! THRIFT SHOPS IN MPLS: The Lost and Found 2524 Nicollet Ave S Steeple People Thrift Store 2004 Lyndale Ave S Hidden Treasures Thrift Store St Anthony Shopping Center 2915 Pentagon Dr By Megan QuistWith all of the current trends out there it’s hard to stay unique at times. As what we all might want is already on 500 other bodies out there on campus. Adidas tennis shoes fall into this category (but hey claps for all of those who customized theirs). Strolling outside over by the light rail, one particular outfit caught my eye. It was not just your average sweat suit, it had so much going on that I didn’t even know where to look at first. The main color was black with different car logos in white as well as some Japanese writing. Red accent details in red were also plastered all over. Accessories consisted of Jordan high top sneakers, a gold watch, and a bucket hat that was black and white tie-dye and the words “nope.” What stood out to me the most about this campus style was the effortless confidence that it evoked. Some may want to call this ensemble flashy, but I would categorize it as cute comfort. Matching sweat suits have come and gone in the fashion world, #tbt to Juicy Couture sweat suits. Many celebrities have been seen in similar styles and are bringing back sweats in a new light. From Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner, Victoria Justice, and Zendaya, have made sweats on the go looking cute. If this style is too “rugged or street” for you, put on some joggers with a crop top, matching sweatshirt top, and some fun sneakers. Throw on a baseball cap with your favorite sports team, or just a plain one with some statement earrings and you are comfy and glam on the go. Style on with Sweats!
By Megan QuistWhen the alarm clock goes off at 7:00am it is never easy to jump out of bed knowing you need this crucial time to stop you from throwing on some leggings and a baggy T. Roaming around campus on a Monday afternoon, it was evident that many students hit the snooze button this morning. But a select few caught my eye. From across the sidewalk I spotted a girl strutting down in dark brown wedges, a black sheer dress, and a tan accent sweater. Her hair was also done in a half up, half down ponytail. The sun was starting to shine mid-afternoon, making the ensemble without a jacket appropriate. What stood out to me the most was the fact that she had her backpack, but also her Chanel purse with her as an added accessory. All of the neutrals together were simple yet sophisticated, and can be found at almost any retailer! What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “What draws me to this style is that no one else will have the chance to ever have the exact same ensemble. Finding unique or DIY pieces brings a sense of creativity and empowerment to my looks. Maybe even add in an old sweater you have not worn in awhile.” Men, come on now. Jeans and a button up isn’t all you can wear to be considered “dressed up.” A tailored and timeless male spotted my eye. Black skinny jeans, a tan fitted jacket, Adidas, a billowing scarf with fringe, and a European hair cut with a set of sunglasses, stopped me for a second. I thought to myself, wow he looks more put together than I do today! Adidas are huge right now, and his vintage ones put together the outfit perfectly. To Get This Look:
